I always have a stash of frozen entrées in my freezer, but they rarely keep me full. How can I make frozen meals better tasting and more satisfying without adding a lot of calories?

Frozen entrées are terrific when crunched for time, but they’re often teeny tiny and unsatisfying. Let’s take things up a notch!

Supersize Beef Entrées with Mushrooms

Beef and mushrooms are a match made in foodie heaven. Why? Because cooked mushrooms have a meaty texture that’s super similar to steak or ground beef. So pop your meal in the microwave, and cook up some ‘shrooms! For steak entrées, cook portabella slices in a skillet. For meals with ground meat, cook up finely chopped mushrooms. Stir it all together, and enjoy!

Pair with Soup or Salad

Enhance your freezer entrée with an easy starter: a bowl of soup or a simple salad. I always keep cans of Amy’s Organic Soups on hand; the Organic Chunky Tomato Bisque is my favorite! As for salad, just grab a bagged mix, and top with a splash of balsamic. Sometimes, I use salsa in place of dressing!

Add Veggie Noodles or Cauliflower Rice for Instant Volume

Is that frozen meal a little heavy on the sauce and light on the starches? Toss in some cauliflower rice or veggie noodles to soak up all the goodness. Make things easier by grabbing the frozen varieties made by Green Giant or Trader Joe’s. Another simple veggie add-in? Frozen stir-fry veggies!

Top with Extra Ready-to-Eat Protein

That tiny portion of chicken just isn’t cutting it. Upgrade your dish with shrimp, chicken, or even beans. Look for cooked shrimp and chicken in the fridge or freezer sections of the supermarket, and stick with canned beans for convenience. HG tip: Drain and rinse your beans to save around 30% of the sodium!

Add Fresh Herbs for a Fresher Taste

Boost flavor with chopped basil, oregano, or cilantro. It’ll give your meal that homemade taste! No fresh herbs on hand, or don’t feel like washing and chopping? Reach for Litehouse Instantly Fresh, a line of freeze-dried herbs that taste similar to fresh. Love that!

Chew on this:

Today, April 4th, is National Ramen Noodle Day. Don’t reach for any ol’ ramen... Check out Mike’s Mighty Good Craft Ramen. It’s insanely delicious and better for you too!
