Hi HG, My boyfriend and I are having a Super Bowl party, but several of my friends and I don't want it to be a calorie-fest. Can you suggest any easy, low-cal options for party foods like wings and pizza? I'm looking for things I can buy premade and just heat up before the game. Thanks! Help the Hostess

Hi Hostess,
| |
You've come to the right place. I've got lots of store-bought swaps for those game-day favorites that'll have everyone cheering... When it comes to wings, I'm obsessed with Lightlife Buffalo Smart Wings, which are faux chicken and totally delicious. Just 110 calories and 3g fat for four wings (PointsPlus® value 2*). MorningStar Farms also makes great Buffalo-style veggie wings -- five for 200 calories and 8g fat (PointsPlus® value 5*). Find them in the freezer aisle. These are both great with celery and carrot sticks and some fat-free sour cream spiked with ranch seasoning mix. For pizza, Amy's Cheese and Spinach Pizza Snacks are great. I especially like the spinach ones, with feta, mozzarella cheese, and tomato sauce. YUM! And each serving (5 - 6 pieces) has a reasonable 190 - 210 calories and 7g fat (PointsPlus® value 5*). You can also grab a few single-serving pizzas -- I like Lean Cuisine and Weight Watchers Smart Ones -- and cut 'em into squares or wedges for a fun snack. For actual multi-serving pies, I like the ones from Amy's (just check the stats; they vary) and Kashi's thin-crust pizza. Find all of these in the freezer aisle. Another great party food for Super Bowl Sunday? MorningStar Farms Mini Corn Dogs. They're meatless but taste just like real corn dogs, and they have a fraction of the fat and calories -- 170 calories and 3.5g fat for four mini dogs (PointsPlus® value 4*). Chili is also big on game day, and it's really filling. Look for kinds with about 200 calories and 3g fat or less per cup. Amy's Organic Medium Black Bean Chili is fantastic. And Health Valley has some great reduced-sodium options. Still hungry? Click here for our latest product finds in a very special "Spotted on Shelves (Super Bowl Edition!)..." section of the News. Hi Hungry Girl, My trips to the grocery store are kind of ruining my diet. From the samples to the tempting fattening treats in every aisle, I'm doomed the minute I enter through those sliding doors. Help! Got any tips? Supermarket Sabotaged

Hi Supermarket Sabotaged,
| |
I hear you. And I think a lot of people are in the same tough spot. Here are some tips to get you in and out of the supermarket safely... Don't shop hungry. You've probably been told this before, but it's really the most important piece of advice anyone can give you. Even if you arrive with good intentions, it's a little scary what happens when your stomach does the shopping! Stick to the list. If you haven't been making a list before you head to the store, it's about time you start! Really think about what foods will set you up for success. Then stock your cart with those items, including guilt-free swaps for tempting fattening treats. Avoid trigger foods. What's a trigger food? Anything that you just can't stop eating once you start. For me, it's salty, carby stuff like chips. As hard as it may be, don't put that food in your shopping cart if you KNOW you'll wind up overdoing it. Or go for the pre-portioned, single-serving options. Count your samples, or skip 'em. Those small bites at the supermarket can really add up. And they'll seem a lot less appealing once you've tallied up those calories! Don't fool yourself into thinking they don't "count." And (shameless plug alert!) definitely pick up a copy of the latest HG best seller... Hungry Girl Supermarket Survival: Aisle by Aisle, HG-Style! You'll find TONS more helpful tips, tricks, and picks in there. Good luck!
