I love my air fryer! I have so many oven-baked recipes that I wish I could make in the air fryer, but I’m not sure how to go about converting them… Have any insight?

Thanks,

You came to the right place. I also love my air fryer: It heats up so much faster than my oven, cooks food quickly, and delivers maximum crispiness! With all the recipe testing we do at Hungryland, we’ve learned a lot about how to take a recipe from one appliance to another. Here are my best oven-recipe conversion tips…

Air-Fryer Conversion Basics

To make oven recipes in an air fryer, lower the temperature by around 25ºF, and reduce the cook time by about 25 percent. For example, if your bagel recipe calls for baking in an oven at 385ºF for 15–17 minutes, cook your bagels in an air fryer at 360ºF for 11–13 minutes. If you don’t see the suggested cooking temperature on your air fryer, just round to the nearest degree!

Always make sure your food is fully cooked before consuming. The above formula is just an estimate, as all ovens and air fryers vary.

Top HG Air-Fryer Tips

Avoid crowding your food to allow for even cooking. Leave room for the air to circulate, and use a larger air fryer when you can. Air fryers come as tiny as 1-quart capacity, but those smaller sizes are best for reheating leftovers or cooking for one. If your air fryer is small, work in batches.

For the crispiest results, give the basket a shake or flip the contents midway through cooking. Since air fryers allow air to circulate all around your food, flipping the food isn’t always necessary. But when I’m cooking a bunch of smaller pieces of food (like veggie fries, for example), it definitely helps to shake things up while cooking.

Don’t be afraid to check on your food before the suggested cook time. Unlike slow cookers, opening an air fryer early won’t impact the results. Whew!

Essential Air-Fryer Accessories

Meet your air fryer’s besties! Non-aerosol nonstick spray can prolong the life of your air fryer, and a refillable oil mister is a great way to go. Always spray the basket to prevent sticking; spritz the food itself to optimize crispiness or browning. Disposable parchment paper air-fryer liners make cleanup a breeze (plus you can score a large set for a low price). Or choose silicone liners: They’re reusable AND they can go straight into the dishwasher.
